Setting up a Studio

Setting Up Your Studio

Location:

Your studio may incorporate several locations, for example, an easel in your studio, spare room or living room, a computer or Laptop in your study, a park or beach where you visit with a camera and sketchbook, a bus stop?

Light:

Light is an element to consider. You may wish to face a window, or have your back to the light. Do you like soft light or bright light? Sometimes you might need to alter the light with blinds or lamps.

The basic materials:

a sketchbook and some pencils (2B, 4B, 6B), watercolour pencils, brushes and paints, a palette, (I use old dinner plates, tiles or plastic containers), a water jar, rags, a table easel if space is limited, or a standing easel, canvas stretchers.

Organising your space:

shelving for magazines or books, colourful or wicker boxes for storing found objects, a trolley for your paints and brushes, a pin board for inspiring photos.

Setting up your studio continued

Once you have begun to set up a working space, and made some decisions about how to place your materials, easel, canvases, paints etc, to make a start you could try this exercise, in order to mark the space as yours, and to imprint your space with a clear energy which will support you.
I love to begin my working day with this 5 minute meditation, as it reconnects me to myself and frees my mind of mind chatter - the other 'to-do's', what is happening up ahead, issues or worries that feel unresolved....the usual stuff!
Sit comfortably with your back supported and feet on the floor, legs uncrossed.
